The foundation of the Nunley Brothers herd is the Santa
Gertrudis cow. To produce the Hereford and Angus cross calves to
sell we begin by raising our own full blood Santa Gertrudis
heifers. To produce these heifers we purchase all of our Gert
bulls from reputable breeders based on performance data,
EPD's, ultrasound, and most recently DNA testing. Before
turning out in the spring of '04 we culled the bull herd
extensively based on marbling and tenderness scores from the DNA
test.

The top bulls that were left were turned out with cows
that have been selected for above average IMF and ribeye scores
from ultrasound testing. One of our bulls purchased from 2S Ranch
back in 1998 did exceptionally well in the DNA test. He was Istar
marbling, 4star tenderness! We were thrilled to find out
we've had those kind of genetics spreading through our herd
for quite awhile. But we didn't stop there. We bred 200 cows
to "Ricardo" in May '04 by artificial insemination.
Ricardo is the only 6 star bull in the Santa Gertrudis breed and
we feel like his genetics will take our herd way up in marbling
and tenderness.

CROSS BREEDING
We use the same selection criteria in selecting bulls
for our cross breeding program as for the replacements. Our
Hereford bulls come from various breeders but all are selected
for good EPD's, and ultrasound data. Most of our Black Angus
bulls have come from Gardiner Angus Ranch in Ashland, Kansas and
Rec Angus from RA Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, TX.
